Wonju-si is located in the center of the Korean peninsula and southwest of Gangwon-do province. It is on the western side of the Taebaek Mountains, which are a major part of Baekdudaegan, stretching along the peninsula north and south.
East of Wonju-si is Yeongwol-gun and Pyeongchang-gun and west of the city is Yeoju-gun and Yangpyeong-gun of Gyeonggi-do province. It borders Hoengseong-gun to North and Chungju-si and Jecheon-si to South.
Wonju-si neighbors two other provinces: Namhan and Seom River define the border between Wonju-si and Yeoju-gun of Gyeonggi-do province. Namhan-gang River and Ungyecheon partitioned the city from Chungju-si of Chungcheongbuk-do.

- Geography & culture: Wonju-si has two rivers supplying water to the city: the Seom River starts from Taegisan Mountain, and the Namhan River stems from Odaesan. Wonju is in a generally flat area, but with numerous low hills. The city is blessed with great cultural heritage and many tourist attractions including Chiaksan National Park and Gangwongamyeong.
