Archaic Period
 
According to the archaeological findings thus far, human life lived in the Wonju area since tens of thousands of years ago.
In the Three Han period, Wonju was located on the eastern-most side of Ma-Han, which was made of 54 tribes.
 
Three Kingdoms Period
 
When Baekjae unified Ma-Han, it became Baekjae’s territory and in the 57th year of King Jangsu (469), the Wonju area was called Pyeongweon-gun through the southward advancement policies of Goguryeo.
 
Unified Shilla
 
In the 18th year of King Munmu (678), the nation’s administrative borders were reorganized and thus called Bukweonsogyeong. By the time of King Gyeongdeok, it was called Bukweongyeong.
As Shilla entered its decline in the end of the 9th century and uprisings became frequent, Yanggil organized his headquarters in the Wonju area and became a powerful force that occupied most of the current Gangwon-do area.
 
Goryeo Dynasty
 
In the 23rd year of Taejo (940) in the Goryeo Dynasty, Bukweongyeong named Wonju.
During administrative district reorganization in the 14th year of Sungjong (995), Wonju area became part of Cheongweon-do. (currently Chungbuk)
During the invasion of the Habdan in the 17th year of King Chungnyeol (1291), named Ikheungdohobu as a monument to the efforts of Won Chung-gab and the people of Wonju, who fought off the invasion.
* In the 34th year of King Chungnyeol (1308), Wonju was promoted and became the center of public administration.
 
Joseon Dynasty
 
During the administrative district reorganization in 1395, the provinces of Gangneung-do and Gyoju-do were combined to make Gangwon-do from ‘Gang’ of Gangneung and ‘Won’ of Wonju. As the Gangwon government bureau was installed in Wonju, it became the capital of Gangwon-do and the center of administration, security, society and culture.
On May 16, 1895, Wonju fell under the jurisdiction of Chungju and on August 4, 1896 it was restored to its original administrative district, but the government was moved away from Wonju to Chungju.
 
Japanese Occupation Period
 
During the provincial administrative district reorganization on March 1, 1914, Wonju-gun became 10-myeon, 67-ri
In 1937, it became Wonju-eub and Wonju-gun became 1-eub, 9-myeon.
 
Current
 
On September 1, 1955 according to law 372, Wonju-eub was integrated with Dangu-ri and Haenggu-ri of Panbu-myeon and Woosan-ri of Hojeo-myeon to become Wonju-si (City) and Wonju-gun underwent a name change to Wonseong-gun.
On January 1, 1995 according to law 4774, Wonju-si and Wonju-gun were integrated to become as Wonju-si. (City)
September 1, 2005 was the 50th anniversary of Wonju-si.
