City Museum
Wonju City Museum displays the history and folk culture of Wonju that had a great effect on our folk history. In addition, in order to become an institute in charge of sociology, culture and education, as well as the increasing level of research on local history, it was opened in November 2000.
Stone and earthen tools from the Paleolithic, Neolithic and Bronze Age, as well as excavated relics from the early Three Kingdoms Period, Buddhist cultural relics collected from several abandoned temples in Wonju, as well as information on the clothing, food and housing of our ancestors are displayed here. In particular, the Bongsan-dong Buddhist statue, Ilsan-dong Five Story Pagoda and Stone Buddha Statue and other architectural pieces display the rich Buddhist culture of the area. In addition, it also holds valuable material that can help visitors understand the history and culture of Wonju from the prehistoric to modern times through ancient documents and focuments related to fighting off the Japanese.
