Introduction |

| |
| The Wonju Chiak Festival, which is held in October when the autumn leaves of Chiaksan is the most colorful, originates from the Dongak Festival, which is accompanied with a ritual service for the mountain gods in hopes of peace in the nation, is where 7 towns near Wonju get together and participate in the festival. The Dongak Festival was stopped at the beginning of the Japanese Occupation, but was restored in 1981 with the 1st Wonju Chiak Festival. It is a cultural festival based on passing down traditional culture and on the Chiaksan, which is grounded on the history and culture of the ancient capital of Gangwon for 500 years during the Joseon Dynasty. The Wonju Chiak Festival, which is a traditional festival of Wonju that has been continued on for 30 years after being started as the Wonju-gun festival in 1971, had its name changed to Gangwon Gamyeong Festival since the ancient capital of Gangwon, which was the center of local administration in the Joseon Dynasty, was designated as a national historical site, in 2005. |
